MAUMELLE 85, FARMINGTON 66
Farmington found ways to score Friday night, but the Cardinals were no match for Maumelle's overall firepower.
Junior forward Mike Fuller scored 8 of his 12 points during an early second-quarter onslaught as the host Hornets cruised to an 85-66 victory over the Cardinals in a 5A-West game.
Farmington scored the first four points of the second quarter to draw within 19-15, but Maumelle (18-3, 6-2) responded by scoring 16 of the next 21 points for a 35-20 advantage with 4:26 left before halftime. The Cardinals (11-9, 2-6) never any closer than nine points the remainder of the game.
"Fuller gave us a big spark off the bench," Maumelle Coach Michael Shook said. "He knocked down some mid-range shots and got to the basket. We put him at the top of our press and he really helped."
Senior point guard Shawn Williams led the Hornets with 16 points, sophomore guard Patrick Greene added 15 points and junior guard Tremont Robinson scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Maumelle led 45-32 at the half and while Farmington managed to claw back to within 55-46 with 2:27 left in the third quarter, the Hornets stretched the lead back to 16 points -- 64-48 -- by the start of the fourth quarter.
Farmington was 9 of 11 from the floor in the second quarter, but could not make up any ground thanks to Maumelle's 10 of 13 shooting performance.
"I don't know how many turnovers we had in the second quarter but whatever it was, it was too much," Farmington Coach Beau Thompson said. "(Maumelle) makes a whole lot of tough shots and I thought in the second quarter that's what they got."
Farmington's Matt Wilson led his team with 20 points while Matt Thomas added 13 points and nine rebounds.
Maumelle finished 30 of 55 from the floor while Farmington was 23 of 54 shooting.
