Arkansas rest area on I-40 to close for $4.8M renovations

HAZEN — State highway officials say a rest area on Interstate 40 in eastern Arkansas will be closed so it can be renovated into a new tourist information center.

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department said both eastbound and westbound facilities at the White River Rest Area, which is located between Hazen and Fredonia, will close Wednesday so work can begin on the $4.8 million project.

The new tourist information center is expected to open in late 2017. It will feature kiosks with tourist and travel information, along with expanded restroom facilities for disabled visitors and baby-changing stations for families.

Similar work is also underway at the Big Piney Rest Area on I-40 in west-central Arkansas.
