Shelter for abused men opens in Batesville

What organizers call a first-of-its-kind shelter for male victims of domestic violence has been set up by a Batesville nonprofit, the Three Rivers Edition of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.

The newspaper reported that Family Violence Prevention Inc. in Batesville has converted a donated house into a three-bedroom shelter that can house up to nine people. One room is available for men with kids.

It is believed to be the first registered shelter for men in the country, the newspaper reported.

"The past executive director of the Arkansas Coalition [Against Domestic Violence] went to a national conference and reported back that we are the first of its kind that is registered with a state coalition,” Patty Duncan, executive director of Family Violence Prevention Inc., told the newspaper.

Since it opened in October, the shelter has housed five men, the organization told the paper.
