The former Little Rock television news anchor was in Arkansas briefly to check on her dog and cast her vote when the news broke; CNN beckoned and soon she was at a nearby television news studio, assuring viewers that Cruz was a "conservative they can trust."

By the next day, Cruz had given her the vacant job.

Instead of slogging along the campaign trail, she'll be spending most of her time at Cruz's headquarters in Texas.

"This is a fantastic team of professionals here. Everyone works tirelessly out of the office here in Houston or out on the road and everyone has one goal in mind and that's to help Ted win the nomination," she said in an interview Wednesday.

Stewart served as a presidential campaign spokesman for former Gov. Mike Huckabee in 2008 and 2016 and for Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum in 2012.

She left the Huckabee campaign in December, resigning at a time when its funding had dried up and key staff members were going without pay.

In January, she joined the Cruz campaign as a senior adviser and headed to Iowa, helping him win that state's Feb. 1 caucuses. Huckabee suspended his campaign after finishing ninth.

Stewart's recent promotion comes as Cruz tries to recover from third-place finishes in the South Carolina primary and Nevada caucus.

Wednesday, Stewart said she's glad to be promoting the Texas Republican.

"Ted is an outstanding example of a true, consistent conservative. He's spent his entire career protecting and defending the Constitution and I'm excited about my new role," she said.

Rick Tyler's firing came one day before Nevadans caucused. Tyler had spread a story and video falsely claiming that challenger Marco Rubio had disparaged the Bible.

Stewart portrayed the incident as an aberration during her CNN appearance.

She assured viewers that Cruz "has maintained the highest level of integrity."

Wednesday, Stewart said Cruz has dealt with the Bible video and is focused on the future.
