SANDWICHING IN HISTORY

Visitors tour Masonic center after attending history lecture

The lure of seeing inside the Albert Pike Memorial Temple, the large, three-story limestone-covered building on Scott Street, drew a large crowd last month for Sandwiching in History. Almost 200 people gathered in the large dining room with hardwood floors and ornate ceiling to hear Rachel Silva with Arkansas Historic Preservation Program lecture on the historic structure. The Neo-Classical Revival-style building with 19 Greek Ionic columns on the front facade is headquarters for Arkansas' Masons.

After the lecture, guests were able to tour the first and second floors, which included the large kitchen, an auditorium, dozens of hand-painted backdrops, robing rooms and ceremonial spaces.

The Sandwiching in History program features a historic property in central Arkansas each month and includes a lecture and tour. The next one is Friday at Lakewood United Methodist Church in North Little Rock. The tours are free and open to the public. To learn more, visit ArkansasPreservation.com.
