State to close I-40 Big Piney rest stop for year, turn it into tourist center

KNOXVILLE — State highway officials say a rest stop along Interstate 40 in west-central Arkansas will be closed for more than a year so it can be renovated into a tourist information center.

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department said the Big Piney Rest Area will close Friday so work can begin on the revamped facilities. The rest area is located between the towns of Knoxville and London.

The state said a new tourist information center will open in its place in mid-2017. The new facility will include more restrooms that can accommodate disabled travelers, along with more family-friendly facilities with baby-changing stations.

The facility will also include self-service kiosks that provide road conditions and information about nearby restaurants, lodging and attractions. The new rest area will also include public Wi-Fi.
