Staples to sing at Tech center debut

Pulaski Technical College's grand opening of its new Center for the Humanities and Arts will feature a performance by soul/gospel singer Mavis Staples.

The event is Feb. 5 in the college's new theater on its main campus at 3000 W. Scenic Drive in North Little Rock.

Reserved tickets are $65, $75 and $100. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with showtime at 8 p.m. Ticket information is available at the college's website, pulaskitech.edu.

Staples has been a successful solo artist as well as part of the Staple Singers, whose hit songs in the 1970s included "Respect Yourself," "I'll Take You There" and "Let's Do It Again."

Staples, 76, received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and was named as one of Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Singers of All Time in 2008.

Staples' appearance at Pulaski Tech will come in the same month as the release of a new album and the premiere of the HBO documentary Mavis! about her life and career.

Founder's Day set by 2 local societies

The central Arkansas chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. and Phi Beta Sigmas Inc. will be hosting their annual joint Founder's Day, starting at 4 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church at 2015 Main St. in North Little Rock.

The event will be part of Zeta Phi Beta's observance of its 96th anniversary.

Guest speaker will be Ernestine Wilson of Nashville, Tenn., the South Central Regional director for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.

Oaklawn Jockey Club banquet set

The North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce's ninth annual Oaklawn Jockey Club banquet will be Wednesday in the Wyndham Riverfront hotel at 2 Riverfront Place in downtown North Little Rock.

The guest speaker will be Pete Aiello, Oaklawn Park's new track announcer. Aiello was hired at the Hot Springs racetrack in December. Racing at Oaklawn Park opens Friday.
