The eighth race is an entry level allowance for 3-year-olds at 1 mile, 1/16th and is a must-follow race for 3-year-old followers. It would not be surprising to see the top finishers point to the Grade III $500,000 Southwest Stakes on Feb. 15. Two horses entered in Monday's $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes -- Cutacorner and Charming Deputy -- scratched in favor of today's race, which drew a field of 11. Today's race also drew undefeated American Dubai for trainer Rodney Richards and Chris Richard-trained Unexplained, the 2-1 program favorite

FINAL FURLONG

Smarty Jones Stakes winner Discreetness will be pointed for the Grade III $500,000 Southwest Stakes at 1 1/16 miles Feb. 15 at Oaklawn, trainer Jinks Fires told the Oaklawn media department. Discreetness, ridden by Jon Court, earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 83 and 10 Kentucky Derby qualifying points for his neck victory over Gordy Florida in Monday's $150,000 race for 3-year-olds. ... When asked to compare Discreetness with 2011 Southwest Stakes and Arkansas Derby winner Archarcharch, Fires told Oaklawn's media department: "I think Discreetness probably is close. They're a little bit different type horse. Discreetness is a longer-striding horse." Archarcharch finished fourth as the even-money favorite in the Smarty Jones before winning the Southwest in his next start. ... Discreetness set a Smarty Jones stakes record -- 1:38.05 over a fast track -- eclipsing the 1:38.15 set by Liberty Bull in the race's first running in 2008. ... Court, 55, the son-in-law of Fires, has won 3,935 races in his career, according to Equibase, racing's official data gathering organization, and pushed his career purse earnings to $96,602,740. Figures are based on North American races only. He rode his first winner in 1980. Court and the late Eddie Razo (2008 and 2011) are the only jockeys to win the Smarty Jones twice. ... Discreetness is the fourth Arkansas-owned horse in the past five years to win the Smarty Jones Stakes, the first of four major local preps for the Kentucky Derby. Discreetness is owned by Dwight Pruett of Texarkana. Other recent Smarty Jones winners with Arkansas connections include Junebugred in 2012 (owned by Alex and JoAnn Lieblong of Conway), Will Take Charge in 2013 (Willis Horton of Marshall) and Far Right in 2015 (Harry Rosenblum of Little Rock). Will Take Charge went on to win an Eclipse Award as the country's champion 3-year-old male of 2013.

Information for this report was contributed by the Oaklawn media department.
