Sooners' Hield gets it going late

NO. 1 OKLAHOMA 82, NO. 13 BAYLOR 72

WACO, Texas -- Buddy Hield scored 14 of his 19 points after halftime, including consecutive three-pointers that put No. 1 Oklahoma ahead to stay in an 82-72 victory at No. 13 Baylor on Saturday.

Hield, the Big 12 scoring leader at 26 points a game, missed the final 9 minutes of the first half with 2 fouls.

Oklahoma (16-2, 5-2 Big 12) matched its season high with 16 three-pointers, including five by Jordan Woodard when he had all 20 of his points in the first half.

The Sooners reached No. 1 for the first time since 1990 this week, then lost 82-77 at No. 19 Iowa State on Monday. But they rebounded big by ending Baylor's 15-game home winning streak to match the Bears (15-4, 5-2) for the Big 12 lead.

Baylor opened the second half with an 11-4 run, tying it at 41-41 with 17:39 left on Ish Wainright's three-pointer before Hield's go-ahead shots. By time Hield hit another three-pointer with 13 minutes left, the Sooners' lead was 57-44.

That was part of a 41-17 run that put Oklahoma up 82-58 before the Bears scored the game's final 14 points against Sooners reserves to make the game look closer.

In other games involving Big 12 teams, Perry Ellis had 26 points, Wayne Selden Jr. added 19 and No. 3 Kansas countered its sluggish start with a torrid finish to beat streaking Texas 76-67. … Tarik Phillip scored West Virginia’s final eight points and the sixth-ranked Mountaineers ended the game on a 10-2 run to rally for an 80-76 victory over Texas Tech, snapping a two-game losing streak. … Monte Morris had 18 points and six assists and No. 19 Iowa State followed a victory over topranked Oklahoma with a 73-60 victory over TCU. … Kamau Stokes and Justin Edwards scored 13 points apiece, and Kansas State hit nine three-pointers to help snap a two-game losing streak, topping Oklahoma State 89-73.

ATLANTIC COAST

Duke takes control

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Grayson Allen scored 28 points and No. 20 Duke took control with a second-half flurry to beat North Carolina State 88-78 and end a three-game losing streak.

Freshman Brandon Ingram added 25 points for the Blue Devils (15-5, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who trailed by 10 points late in the first half but seized momentum with their go-ahead 14-0 run.

Matt Jones came up with two three-pointers in the game-turning burst, which allowed Duke to build a double-digit lead and put the Wolfpack (11-9, 1-6) in catch-up mode.

Duke kept the pressure on, too, shooting 71 percent from the field after halftime -- including 7 for 11 from three-point range -- in an efficient showing and finished at 54 percent for the game.

In other games involving ACC men’s teams, Notre Dame, despite missing its best player for much of the afternoon, got 16 points each from Bonzie Colson and Steve Vasturia in a 76-49 victory over Boston College. … Ja’Quan Newton scored 18 points and No. 15 Miami overcame a flurry of misses in the lane to beat Wake Forest 77-63. … Damion Lee scored 17 points, Anas Mahmoud added 15 and No. 17 Louisville held on in the closing seconds to beat hard-luck Georgia Tech 75-71. … Jamel Artis’ three-pointer with 33 seconds remaining helped Pittsburgh rally for a 74-72 victory over Florida State.

Spartans snap streak

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Bryn Forbes scored 25 points and Denzel Valentine had 19 points and 14 rebounds, leading No. 11 Michigan State over No. 7 Maryland 74-65.

The Spartans (17-4, 4-4 Big Ten) had lost three consecutive games, including their last two at home.

The Terrapins (17-3, 6-2) have lost just two of their last 13 games and both setbacks were in the state of Michigan. They fell to the Wolverines on the road earlier this month.

Maryland's Melo Trimble scored 24 points and Robert Carter had 13.

In other games involving Big Ten teams, Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell scored 17 points and Max Bielfeldt added 13 as No. 25 Indiana blew out Northwestern 89-57. … Duncan Robinson scored 21 points and Derrick Walton Jr. had 12 rebounds to go with his 19 points, leading Michigan to an 81-68 victory over Nebraska. … Malcolm Hill had 28 points and 10 rebounds to lead a late surge by Illinois to beat Minnesota 76-71 in overtime, ending an eight-game losing streak on the road for the Fighting Illini.

Xavier bounces back

CINCINNATI -- James Farr had a career-high 24 points as part of his fourth game of the season with 10 or more points and rebounds, and No. 5 Xavier bounced back from its first home loss of the season by beating Seton Hall 84-76.

Farr had his finest all-around game. The senior forward had 15 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals and a career-high 4 assists. His seven field goals matched his career high, and he made 10 of 11 free throws.

Xavier (17-2, 5-2 Big East) blew open a tight game with a 21-7 spurt in the second half led by Farr and Trevon Bluiett, who scored all of his 15 points in the half. Bluiett played only 10 minutes in the first half because he had two fouls.

The Musketeers' front line reasserted itself against Seton Hall (13-6, 3-4) in the second half and finished with a 46-42 edge in rebounds.

In other games involving Big East teams, Rodney Purvis made two free throws with 17.7 seconds left to help Connecticut lock up a 68-62 victory over Georgetown. … Maurice Watson scored 20 points, Isaiah Zierden had 13 and Creighton beat No. 18 Butler 72-64.

Marshall squeaks by

NORFOLK, Va. -- James Kelly nailed a three-pointer with four seconds to go and Marshall edged Old Dominion 78-75.

Kelly scored 21 points with 12 rebounds and had 4 steals with a blocked shot for the Thundering Herd (10-10, 6-1 Conference USA). Ryan Taylor scored 19 points with seven rebounds, Stevie Browning had 15 points and Jon Elmore added 13. Marshall shot 51 percent overall.

Trey Freeman led Old Dominion (10-10, 3-4) with a career-high 37 points. Brandan Stith scored 15 points and Zoran Talley added 10. Aaron Bacote, who averages 15.0 points per game, was held to three points on 1-of-8 shooting.

A close game throughout, Freeman's layup with 31 seconds left tied it at 75-75. On the ensuing possession, Elmore's layup attempt was blocked by Stith, but Marshall corralled the rebound and Kelly made a three-pointer with four seconds left to put the Herd up.

Cal hangs on

BERKELEY, Calif. — Gabe York dribbled off his foot, then drove to the basket and missed a contested shot in the waning seconds, and California held on behind Jordan Mathews to beat No. 12 Arizona 74-73.

Mathews converted an off-balance layin under pressure with 1:13 to play and finished with a season-best 28 points. Cal stayed unbeaten at home in Haas Pavilion, where students from the sellout crowd of 11,858 rushed the court after the final buzzer.

York’s three-pointer with 54.6 seconds left pulled Arizona within two, then Kadeem Allen’s layup the next time down tied it at 73-73 with 39.3 seconds to play.

Jaylen Brown made the second of two free throws with 18.4 seconds left for Cal to give Arizona one last chance to win it. But the Wildcats failed to earn Sean Miller his 300th career victory in his first try.

In other games involving Pac-12 teams, Dillon Brooks scored 25 points and Chris Boucher had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Oregon to an 86-72 victory over UCLA. … George King scored 22 points to lead Colorado to a 75-70 victory at Washington State.

MOUNTAIN WEST

Fresno State hangs on

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- Cezar Guerrero and Torren Jones scored five points in the final 32 seconds to give Fresno State a 56-55 victory over Air Force.

Guerrero hit a three-pointer from the right wing with 32 seconds left and Jones finished a layup with five seconds remaining as Fresno State beat Air Force for the sixth consecutive time.

Zach Kocur answered Guerrero's three-pointer with his own three with 21 seconds left to give the Falcons a 55-54 lead. Julien Lewis missed a jumper on the other end but Jones grabbed the rebound and put it back for the victory.

The last three games between the two schools have been decided by two points or less, with Fresno State winning all three.

In other games involving Mountain West men's teams, Elijah Brown tied a career high with 33 points and grabbed six rebounds to help New Mexico beat San Jose State 83-64. ... Jeremy Hemsley scored 18 points and Trey Kell had 15, including 10 in a decisive second-half run that carried San Diego State to a 70-55 victory against Utah State, the Aztecs' seventh consecutive victory to open conference play.
