A 2-year-old died and his mother was hospitalized after a pickup driver veered off the highway south of Benton early Sunday morning, hit them and drove away.
About 3:30 a.m., a woman was pulling her son in a wagon along Arkansas 190. They were near a curve when a passing driver lost control of a pickup, according to Arkansas State Police.
The truck hit the wagon, continued through a ditch and went back onto the highway before leaving the scene, according to police. The woman and her son were both taken to Saline Memorial Hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead.
Privacy laws prevent authorities from releasing the child's name, state police spokesman Bill Sadler said.
Authorities were withholding the name of the woman Sunday as they continued to investigate.
