Second Thoughts

Gose doesn't take his seat peacefully

Things haven't gone well for Anthony Gose this season.

Gose, the Detroit Tigers' starting center fielder at the beginning of the season, currently is taking his swings for the Class AAA Toledo Mud Hens -- where things got particularly bad Saturday.

Gose was pulled from the lineup in the third inning by Manager Lloyd McClendon (yes, the same Lloyd McClendon who managed the Pirates and Mariners) in favor of pinch-hitter Jeff McVaney. According to the Toledo Blade, Gose wasn't pleased with the decision and engaged in a heated exchange with McClendon.

Gose stormed into the clubhouse, where he emptied his locker and vanished.

According to ESPN.com, the Tigers are looking into the incident involving the struggling 25-year-old.

"Any time a player reacts that way to a manager, it's a concern, but it's certainly not anything that can't be dealt with or gotten past," Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus said, adding that Gose's struggles this year could have played a role. "I think you have to understand the human side, the human element involved, the emotions involved, and those struggles play into his emotions obviously."

Gose batted just .240 in 30 games with the Tigers and has fallen off further in Toledo with a .185 batting average in 50 games.

Man's best man

The Baltimore Ravens Jeremy Zuttah may be the center on the field, but his dog Ace was surely at the center of attention on Zuttah's wedding day.

Zuttah and his now wife, Heran Haile, had once considered getting married at City Hall, but when the two found out their pit bull wouldn't be allowed to be a witness in that venue, they altered their plans. Instead, they held their wedding at a converted gym, where Ace was permitted to accompany Zuttah down the aisle.

The pit bull was fitted with a tuxedo and reportedly had a couple of sessions with a dog trainer to keep his cool as he walked with Zuttah down the aisle.

Ace came into the picture while Zuttah and Haile were both students at Rutgers almost eight years ago.

Olympic flight

Jordan Spieth is the latest golfer to withdraw from the Olympics.

Wrote Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: "If this keeps up maybe Tiger Woods should consider going to Rio -- he could win by attrition."

Oops, so sorry

For the second consecutive major, the USGA had to serve up an apology.

At the U.S. Open, the USGA said it stood by the one-shot penalty it gave to Dustin Johnson at Oakmont, but that it should have been more decisive so Johnson and everyone else knew the score over the final seven holes.

There was another ruling at the U.S. Women's Open in a playoff when Anna Nordqvist grounded her club in a bunker on the 17th hole, leading to debate about the timing of when the players were informed. But the big gaffe came later, when USGA President Diana Murphy called the winner "Bethany" instead of Brittany Lang.
