Man found fit to stand trial in killings of mother, stepfather in Arkansas home

TEXARKANA — A man accused in the beating deaths of his mother and stepfather in their Texarkana home has been declared fit to stand trial by a psychologist.

The Texarkana Gazette reports that 46-year-old Bronson Scoggins is charged with two counts of capital murder, and he appeared in court Tuesday for a status hearing.

Scoggins was involuntarily committed following his arrest Aug. 15, 2008, in the deaths of Al and Sandra Walsh. Authorities say Scoggins used a knife and an axe handle to kill the couple.

A June 15 report from a forensic psychologist at the Arkansas State Hospital says Scoggins has a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type, but is currently competent to move forward with his case.

A September hearing has been scheduled to discuss the psychologist's findings.
