Hill, a native of Durham, N.C., now lives in New Orleans with her guitarist husband and co-writer, Matt Hill, who convinced her to take her singing to a new level. She had grown up singing gospel music in church, and was so talented that she was moved to the adult choir when she was 10. As a teenager, she embraced punk rock, drawn to the sounds of Bad Brains, Fishbone and Agnostic Front.
As she heard the music of rhythm and blues legends Ruth Brown, Etta James and LaVern Baker, she began to focus on a blend of rock, punk, gospel, and rhythm and blues. In 2013 she released an EP, soon followed by her full-length debut CD, Here's Nikki Hill, and in 2015 by her latest album, Heavy Hearts, Hard Fists.
