I-49 work to shut lanes on U.S. 412

Construction on Interstate 49 in Springdale will require overnight lane closures on U.S. 412 beginning Wednesday and lasting through Aug. 12, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Crews painting new steel girders on the Interstate 49 overpass will be removing safety platforms beginning at 11 p.m. Wednesday. Once the platforms are removed, crews will begin painting and require alternate closures of the eastbound and westbound lanes through 5 a.m. Thursday.

Single-lane traffic will be maintained in each direction during the work, the department said. All traffic may intermittently be stopped for 15-minute periods as needed. Main lane traffic on I-49 will not be affected.

The work will continue on Thursday night and then not resume until Sunday night, the department said. The work will continue on a Sunday night to Thursday night schedule through Aug. 12, weather permitting. Traffic will be controlled using signs, barrels and flaggers.

This work is a part of a $28.3 million project to widen a 4.5-mile section of I-49 between U.S.. 71B in Johnson and U.S. 412. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year, the department said.
