Wright holds on for AWGA title

Sarah Wright of Fayetteville held off Russellville's Julie Oxendine by one stroke Wednesday to win the Arkansas Women's Golf Association Championship at Centennial Valley Golf and Country Club in Conway.

Wright, a junior at Henderson State who won the Arkansas State Golf Association Match Play Championship earlier this month, led Oxendine by three strokes entering Wednesday's third round. Oxendine trimmed the deficit to one after the front nine, then took the lead with a birdie at the 10th and par at the 11th.

Wright led for good after a par on the 12th when Oxendine made double bogey. Wright increased the lead to three with a birdie at the par-4 17th then hung on at the 18th where she made double bogey to Oxendine's par.

Wright won with a 15-over 231. Tanna Richard finished third at 22 over, while Taylor Loeb was fourth, four strokes behind Richard. Pam Spikes and Taylor Reed tied for fifth at 27-over 243.

Other winners Wednesday included: Kerry Lareau (President's), Katie Speir (Open 1), Wanda Jett (Open 2) and Casey Ott (Juniors).

VOLLEYBALL

Central Baptist hires coach

Central Baptist College has hired Shatel Gaines as its new volleyball coach.

Gaines, of Jonesboro, had served as volleyball coach at Cape Girardeau (Mo.) High School. She has five years of coaching experience in different capacities at the high school and Junior Olympic levels.

CBC opens the 2016 season against Mid-America Christian on Aug. 30 in Conway.
