Two Saline County sheriff's deputies were injured Saturday afternoon while attempting to apprehend a suspected trespasser, authorities said.

According to a news release from the sheriff's office, the deputies were trying to catch a fleeing suspect identified as Christopher Miller. Police said Miller, 19, of Little Rock, hit one of the deputies in the back of the head with a piece of firewood. The other deputy hurt his leg while trying to make the arrest.

The deputies were reportedly called to a home in the 19000 block of Woodland Acres just north of Colonel Glenn Road in Saline County to investigate a report of criminal trespassing. At the address, the deputies saw a man later identified as Miller inside the residence, the release said.

Police said Miller kicked a hole in the wall to try and escape and that the deputies were injured as they tried to arrest him.

The release said Miller continued to resist arrest violently and tried to wrestle away one of the deputy's service weapons. The deputies eventually handcuffed Miller and called for backup and emergency personnel, the release said.

The deputies were taken to Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, where they were treated and released later that night.

Miller faces charges including aggravated assault on a police officer, battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, fleeing on foot and criminal trespassing.

The release indicated there was drug paraphernalia in the front room of the residence.

Miller was booked at the Saline County jail at 8:57 a.m. Sunday. He remained there Monday with bail set at $76,000.

A July 12 court date is scheduled.
