Police were called out to South Meadowcliff and Delrose drives at about 8:30 p.m. after the boy was struck by a gray Chevrolet Impala as he skateboarded down Delrose, police spokesman Lt. Steve McClanahan said. Witnesses told police that a man and a woman were in the car.

The woman, whom McClanahan said witnesses described as distraught, got out to check on the boy but was ordered back in the car by the man, who then drove away.

McClanahan posted on Twitter late Tuesday night that the man surrendered to police and the Impala was recovered. The post did not mention the woman passenger.

The child, whom police did not identify, was taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

McClanahan said Tuesday night that police are canvassing the neighborhood for more witnesses.
