State police: Authorities misidentified person hurt in officer-involved shooting

Arkansas State Police said Thursday that authorities misidentified a person shot and injured by a Pine Bluff police officer Wednesday.

He was initially identified as Deontae Garrett, 19, who was wanted on charges of kidnapping, residential burglary and theft out of Cleveland County.

The person shot is now believed by state police to “likely” be a minor “who has not been positively identified.” He was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center on Wednesday night in critical condition, authorities said.

He was listed as being in stable condition Thursday morning, state police said.

Authorities responded about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday outside a home at 5701 Womack St., where they intended to arrest Garrett on the charges.

While at the scene Wednesday afternoon, a Pine Bluff police officer shot the person after he pointed a gun at the officer and refused to drop his weapon. The officer’s identity has not been released.

Later in the day, Garrett surrendered to Pine Bluff police on the three charges.

State police said an investigation is ongoing into whether the officer’s use of deadly force was consistent with Arkansas law, as well as whether charges may be filed against the person carrying the weapon.

Jefferson County prosecutor Kyle Hunter will review state police findings to determine whether charges will be filed in the case.

A request for comment Thursday morning from the Pine Bluff Police Department was not immediately returned.
