Two at UA Truman Scholars, to get money for grad school

FAYETTEVILLE -- Two University of Arkansas at Fayetteville students have been named Truman Scholars.

Victoria Maloch and Danielle Neighbour are among 54 students nationally to be honored by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. They will receive $30,000 to pay for graduate school.

The foundation honors students for their academic achievement, leadership and commitment to public service. Every year, the foundation seeks to name at least one scholar from each state, according to the organization's website.

Maloch, of Magnolia, is a junior studying agricultural business and agricultural communications. In 2014-15, she served as secretary for the National Future Farmers of America Organization and has worked in the offices of former U.S. Rep. Mike Ross and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.

Her goals include attaining degrees in law and agricultural law.

"Receiving this honor reaffirms my commitment to a life of service through public policy," Maloch said in a statement released by UA.

Neighbour, of Lenexa, Kan., is a junior studying civil engineering and Spanish. She recently traveled to Ecuador and worked to improve drinking water systems in villages.

She plans on earning a master's degree in water resources and environmental engineering.

In a statement released by UA, Neighbour said she is "eager to continue working to alleviate water scarcity issues in developing nations."

UA was one of six institutions with multiple students named Truman Scholars this year.
