Golf course to get new putting grass

A temporary closure of War Memorial Golf Course will begin Monday.

The course will be closed until Aug. 12 as the putting greens and the greens on holes 1 through 18 are converted from Tifdwarf Bermuda grass to the denser, shorter Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda grass.

A nursery green also will be constructed, and "contours on some greens will be modified to compensate for the increased green speeds that will result from the change in grass type," according to a news release.

The golf course hasn't had any improvements in more than 20 years, with the exception of greens 13 and 14, which were relocated in 2010.

"Golfers will get to experience a significant improvement in the putting quality. The appearance of the greens will also be greatly enhanced by this type of Bermuda grass, one of the most popular putting surfaces in the South," said Truman Tolefree, the director of the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

The city's two other public golf courses -- Rebsamen and Hindman -- already have the Champion Ultradwarf grass.

Lecture to review architect's career

Hicks Stone, the son of architect and Arkansas native Edward Durell Stone, will speak about his father's life and career Tuesday in Little Rock.

Edward Durell Stone was born in 1902 to a pioneering Fayetteville family, according to a news release from the Architecture and Design Network, sponsor of the lecture. He went on to design well-known structures including Radio City Music Hall and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

His Arkansas structures include the UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock, the University of Arkansas Fine Arts Building in Fayetteville and the Pine Bluff Civic Center, according to the release.

Hicks Stone, also a practicing architect, is the author of a 2011 biography, Edward Durell Stone: A Son's Untold Story of a Legendary Architect.

His lecture will take place Tuesday at the Arkansas Arts Center, 501 E. Ninth St., at 6 p.m. A reception will begin at 5:30 p.m.
