Man fatally struck on I-30 while standing outside vehicle

A Canadian man was killed Thursday after he was hit by a truck while standing on the shoulder of Interstate 30 in Hempstead County, Arkansas State Police said.

Melenta Zekanovic, 51, of Kitchener, Ontario, had been driving west on I-30 when he pulled his 2007 Volvo onto the shoulder around 5:30 p.m. near Hope, according to a state police report.

Zekanovic was standing between the white fog line and the driver's side door when an International truck pulling onto the shoulder struck him and his vehicle, deputies said.

Hempstead County Coroner Ben Brazzel pronounced Zekanovic dead at the scene at 6:08 p.m.

The driver of the truck, 63-year-old Myrtis Easter Jr., of Little Rock, was not injured, according to the report.

Police described weather and road conditions as clear and dry at the time of the accident.

Zekanovic's death was the 162nd reported on an Arkansas road this year, according to preliminary police information.
