Man, 20, dies in Arkansas jail

A 20-year-old man died this week in the Franklin County jail in Ozark.

Cody Jack Franklin of the Chester area was arrested Tuesday for obstructing government operations, said Chief Carolyn McCain of the Franklin County sheriff's office.

McCain said the time of Franklin's death would be determined by the Arkansas State Police, which is investigating the case.

Bill Sadler, a spokesman for the state police, said they were notified Wednesday morning that someone was found unresponsive in his cell in the Franklin County jail.

"Jailers have been interviewed," Sadler said. "Any other forensic evidence that can be collected has been, and the body has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for manner and cause of death."

Franklin County Sheriff Anthony Boen said he could release no further information at this point.

The Cedarville Future Farmers of America group put a posting on its Facebook page Wednesday morning: "It is with a heavy heart that I tell you about the passing of our former officer Cody Jack Franklin. He was definitely one of a kind."

According to Crawford County Circuit Court records, Franklin was arrested in January 2015 and pleaded guilty in July to four counts of felony breaking or entering and four counts of theft of property, two of which were felony counts. He was sentenced to six years probation.
