American Legion Post 71 Business Meeting

CABOT — American Legion Post 71 of Cabot will have its monthly business meeting at 7 p.m. at Post 71. The group will elect officers. All members are invited to attend.

Boys & Girls Club Sports Banquet

JACKSONVILLE — The Boys & Girls Club of Jacksonville will have its fourth annual Sports Banquet at 6:30 p.m. at the Jacksonville Community Center. The guest speaker will be Steve “Wildman” Wilson. The event will include dinner, a silent auction, and volunteer and scholarship award announcements. Tickets are $50 each.

The Ultimate Grill-Fest

SEARCY — The Ultimate Grill-Fest: Hamburgers for Homelessness will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Berryhill Park to benefit Jacob’s Place Homeless Mission. There will be kids’ activities and music by Jason Truby and Jay & the Twilighters. The suggested minimum donation for admission is $5, which includes a hamburger, chips, a drink and ice cream. Fulton County Homecoming Festival

SALEM — The 67th annual Fulton County Homecoming Festival will take place both days on the Fulton County Courthouse Square. The festival will include the Open Street Market with a wide variety of food and craft booths, along with KSAR Radio-sponsored attendance awards and a parade, as well as a fish fry, a street dance, races, contests, a car show and other events around town. Homecoming Festival 5K Race

SALEM — The 2016 Bank of Salem Mark Thomas Memorial Apple Pie 5K Run will begin at 8 a.m. Online registration is available at www.register-wizard.com/events/applepierun/register. Spring River Associational Singing

SAFFELL— The Spring River Associational Singing will begin at 6 p.m. at the Saffell Missionary Baptist Church, 467 Arkansas 25. Singers and musicians from the Spring River Association are especially encouraged to attend, and the public is invited. Special singing/instrumentals are encouraged as well. Congregational singing will come primarily from the Heavenly Highway Hymnal, 2nd Edition, but other books will be used. Light refreshments will be served following the singing. Civil War Marker Dedication Service

CALICO ROCK — A dedication service for Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Marker will be presented at 11 a.m. in Trimble House Park on Arkansas 56, across the street from the Calico Rock Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The service will be conducted by the Izard County Historical Society and the Arkansas Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans and United Daughters of the Confederacy. FNBC/Horseshoe Bend Fire Truck Open

HORSESHOE BEND — The Horseshoe Bend Volunteer Fire and Rescue will have its fourth annual FNBC/Horseshoe Bend Fire Truck Open at the Turkey Mountain Golf Course. The tournament will be a three-person scramble with an entry fee of $120 per team. There will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m., preceded by coffee and doughnuts at 8 a.m. Golf carts are not included in the entry fee but will be available with advance reservations. Memorial Day Ceremony

CABOT — American Legion Post 71 will present its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. at Veterans Park Community Center. The Post 71 Honor Guard will post colors and assist with the ceremony, which will be followed by a wreath-laying service at the Veterans Monument in front of the center. Attire will be Post 71 caps and summer dress — white polo shirts and gray slacks, or other appropriate attire.

T Tauri Movie Camp Registration

BATESVILLE — The T Tauri Movie Camp, which offers a wide variety of video-production workshops for aspiring filmmakers up to the age of 18, is accepting registrations for the 12th annual summer youth program, which will take place July 18-30 in Batesville. Workshops vary from two to 3 1/2 days in length and include Script to Screen Narrative Filmmaking, Hometown Documentary, Depicting Zombies, and a new offering, BrickFilms (stop-motion animation utilizing LEGO characters). Summer Reading Program and Story Hour

BATESVILLE — Registration for the Independence County Library’s Summer Reading Program, for preschoolers to sixth-graders. begins Wednesday. Register at the library, 368 E. Fulton County Fair Booth Rental

SALEM — The Fulton County Fair Association is accepting reservations for commercial booth space for the 2016 county fair. Booths will set up in the new Salem Civic Center from 2-5 p.m. July 25 and remain in place until 7 p.m. July 30. Inside booths are 10-by-10 feet for $60, plus $5 for electricity. ASUN Summer Hours

NEWPORT — Arkansas State University-Newport’s hours of operation have shifted to its summer schedule: ASUN’s campuses in Newport, Jonesboro and Marked Tree will be open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, through Aug. 11. With the exception of White River Hall on the Newport campus, all ASUN offices and locations will be closed Fridays. Events that are already set to take place on Fridays during the summer will go on as scheduled. ASUN will resume normal operating hours Aug. 15.

First Responder Course

BATESVILLE — A First Responder course will be offered from 5:30-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 31 through June 30, in Room 926 of the Nursing Allied Health Building at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville. The fee is $125, plus a textbook. First Responder teaches students emergency care for trauma patients, splinting techniques, bleeding control, rescue procedures, how to prepare a patient for transport and stabilization of a patient. Library Summer Celebration

BATESVILLE — To celebrate summer, the Independence County Library, 368 E. Main St., is offering lots of new books, DVDs, audio books, graphic novels and new programs. EMT Instructor Course

BATESVILLE — The University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville will offer an EMT instructor course to introduce the experienced EMT to the teaching aspects of EMS, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 13-17. The program includes lectures and student demonstrations to practice teaching skills. The course fee is $185, plus the cost of a textbook. Summer Reading Camp

BATESVILLE — Registration is open for Get in the Game … Read! — the Ozark Foothills Literacy Project’s 2016 Summer Reading Camp for children entering first through sixth grades. The camp will meet from 9 a.m. to noon June 6-9 at Fellowship Bible Church (formerly Landers Theater), 156 S. Third St. The camp will offer engaging reading and writing activities with a focus on stories related to competition, physical activity and sports heroes. Lifeguard Classes

JACKSONVILLE — Lifeguard classes will be offered at the Jacksonville Community Center. Participants must pass a pre-test and be at least 15 years old. Cabot Lions Club Meetings

CABOT — The Cabot Lions Club has regular get-togethers at noon the first and third Thursdays of the month at the KingPin Sports Grill. Lions serve local communities and protect the planet. Club members provide children with eyeglasses, offer food for seniors and are among the first to respond when disaster strikes. All are invited to attend the meetings.

Summer Bridge Program

NEWPORT — Arkansas State University-Newport will offer a Summer Bridge program Tuesday through June 29 for high school students who want to earn four hours of college credit. Second Time Around Bookstore’s New Hours

SEARCY — The Literacy Council of White County operates the Second Time Around Bookstore at 811 S. Main St., Suite D. The literacy office and store’s new hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday. The bookstore is closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
