UALR honors alumni trio for serious overachieving

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Alumni Association and UALR Foundation Fund Board lauded some serious overachievers at its May 13 awards luncheon, held at the Clinton Presidential Center.

Christian O'Neal, vice chancellor of university advancement at UALR, welcomed guests, and UALR Alumni Association President Don Riggin ran the program, which honored Elaine Eubank as Distinguished Alumna; Paul Nolte with the President's Award; and '15 graduate Chloe Deaton with the Edward L. Whitbeck Memorial Award. They were introduced by Chancellor Joel Anderson, Riggin and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Zulma Toro.

Eubank, supported by perhaps the most guests in attendance, is president and chief executive of Easter Seals Arkansas, preceded by a 22-year career at CareLink, which provides resources for older people and their families in central Arkansas. Though she encountered many successes in these jobs and others, she was declared at the luncheon as "a failure at retiring."

Riggin deemed Nolte a veteran entrepreneur in the election industry. As immediate past chairman of the alumni association's scholarship committee, Nolte automated the scholarship system, modernizing the application and interview processes and planned and budgeted scholarships through 2024. Nolte was called on by the media as an expert speaker on Florida's controversial voting results during the 2000 presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore.

Deaton, on the eve of graduation and then eight days away from getting married, taught a metal jewelry-making class to Nicaraguan women participating in Nueva Imagen, described as a program for women to support themselves after a previous life of prostitution. Her double degree is in Spanish and fine arts.

Awards were handed out after a lunch of salad topped with hardwood-smoked breast of chicken. A handful of alumni scholarship recipients also attended.
