Interfaith service to assist food bank

An interfaith Thanksgiving church service that will benefit the Arkansas Food Bank is planned for Monday.

The 7 p.m. service will be led by the Rev. Lindy Vogado of Second Presbyterian Church and will take place at the Temple B'nai Israel at 3700 N. Rodney Parham Road.

All offerings donated during the service will aid the Arkansas Food Bank. There will be a reception after the service.

"All are invited to join in this interfaith expression of gratitude to God for the many blessings we have received," a news release said.

Awards to honor preservation work

The Quapaw Quarter Association will host its Greater Little Rock Preservation Awards ceremony next week.

The ceremony, which takes place during the association's annual meeting, is at 5 p.m. Nov. 30 at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, 503 E. Ninth St.

The event is free and open to the public. People do not have to be members of the association to attend, but anyone who wishes to may join at the event.

Hor d'oeuvres, beer and wine will be provided.

Santa, Mrs. Claus to visit at lighting

The Bernice Garden will host a tree-lighting event Dec. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Booker T. Washington Elementary School's choral group will sing holiday songs, and Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit with children during the event at 1401 S. Main St.

The Loblolly Creamery food truck will be set up to serve hot drinks and sweets.

Arts Center to open holiday play Dec. 1

The Elves and the Shoemaker play opens at the Arkansas Arts Center on Dec. 1 with a "pay what you can" night.

Tickets for the preview night must be purchased in person from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Arts Center's visitors center or from 6 to 6:45 p.m. at the Children's Theatre box office in the lower lobby level the night of the show. The show starts at 7 p.m.

The maximum "pay what you can" purchase is six tickets per person. Additional tickets can be purchased at normal ticket prices.

The Elves and the Shoemaker will then run from Dec. 2 through Dec. 18 at the Children's Theatre at the center, 501 E. Ninth St. Tickets for those nights are $12.50 each, or $10 for Arts Center members.

The play is a re-imagining of the Grimm brothers' folktale of a poor cobbler with a good heart and grateful spirit. Jack Shoemaker has debts due with the new year, but he's trying to help his family have a happy Christmas. When he starts losing hope, elves visit him in the night and grant a magical gift that reminds him what is truly important -- family.

The performance will be directed by Keith Smith.
