Arkansas man, 36, electrocuted by power line

A Marion County man died Friday apparently after coming in contact with a power line.

Michael Paul Wood, 36, of Summit, was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner, according to a news release from the Marion County sheriff's office.

"It was pretty evident that he died by electrocution," said Sgt. Silas Gibson, a criminal investigator with the sheriff's office. "He had injuries that were consistent with electrocution."

The sheriff's office received a 911 call at about 6 p.m. Friday regarding a downed, "sparking" power line near Yellville Industrial Park, Gibson said.

A deputy was driving on Arkansas 202 toward Summit, 2 miles north of Yellville, when he saw a man running toward him waving his arms, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. The man told the deputy there was a downed line and a man lying in the ditch.

An ambulance and first responders were dispatched to the scene.

Gibson said Entergy Arkansas Inc. was contacted and sent personnel to remove the live power line so emergency personnel could check on Wood, but he was already dead.

"The safety of our customers, employees and the public is our top priority," said Sally Graham, a spokesman for Entergy Arkansas. "A pedestrian came in contact with an energized line. ... We remind our customers and the general public to stay away from downed power lines and to call 800 9OUTAGE."

Gibson said the power line was on the ground when the deputy arrived, but he didn't know if the line was down or perhaps swinging when Wood came in contact with it.

Gibson said the case is under investigation.
