Mesh is so last year

Here's some bad news for Christmas decorating enthusiasts who can't do without the ubiquitous mesh trim in their wreaths and garlands: Mesh is on its way out.

"That's sad," says interior design professional Shayla Copas, who got an early look at trends at the last Dallas Total Homes Gift Market, held each January. "Mesh [was] able to fill in gaps ... for those that were on a budget ... Ornaments are really what's expensive." Mesh is being replaced by fine ribbon. But, "I still have clients that love their mesh."

A few other trends to look for in Christmas decorating:

• A return to classic elements, such as glass ornaments.

• Smaller ornaments. So, in addition to throwing out your mesh, you might want to unload those soccer-ball-size Christmas-tree bulbs.

• A return to a more woodsy look.

Panicking yet? Don't, Copas says. It usually takes a bit for retailers, then clients, to catch on to the trends that are forecast early at market. "We're going to be putting mesh in homes this year."
