BOONEVILLE -- Alex Amos, who shot and killed Ned Ladd here Saturday night, was discharged from custody following a preliminary hearing before Justice Castleberry today. Not all of the state's witnesses testified and none of the defense witnesses testified. Ladd had a gun in his hand and another in his pocket when he was shot, witnesses said. They testified that he was attempting to fire, but that the revolver failed to work.

• Pulaski County Judge Arch Campbell may continue in office automatically for the next two years. This was the opinion today of both Campbell and a legal advisor, Atty. Carl Langston, at a conference involving the status of the county judge's office. Their contention is that there is no provision for an appointment by the governor since there is no vacancy nor is there one for a special election. In short this would take the matter of an appointment out of the hands of the executive branch and the situation would remain status quo.

• Two blocks of Marshall Street fronted by Arkansas Children's Hospital will be permanently closed to through traffic starting Sunday evening. The change is designed to make entering and exiting the main hospital safer for patients, their families and employees, hospital officials said. Motorists no longer will be able to turn right on Marshall from the exit ramp of Interstate 630 eastbound. Nor will motorists be able to continue north on Marshall across the overpass to have quick access to I-630 west. Instead, motorists coming off I-630 east will be directed down Eighth Street one block to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, where they will turn right and proceed one more block and turn right onto Maryland Avenue to enter the hospital campus.
