Low-cost pet microchips available at event in Little Rock

Dog and cat owners can take their animals to be microchipped from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today.

Microchipping will be held in a tented area in the parking lot near the front door of the Bass Pro Shops store at 1 Bass Pro Way in Little Rock. Brian Barron of the Shackleford Road Veterinary Clinic will perform the procedure on a first-come, first-served basis. Procedures are sponsored by Friends of the Animal Village, a volunteer support group of the Little Rock Animal Village, which is Little Rock's animal shelter. The cost is $15 per animal. Cash and credit cards will be accepted.

In addition to microchipping, the Little Rock Animal Village mobile adoption unit will set up an area for people to visit with adoptable dogs.

If a microchipped animal is lost and taken to a shelter or veterinarian, the pet can be scanned for a microchip to show a unique identification number. That number can then be called in to a pet recovery service, and the owner can be contacted using information on file. Unlike collars with tags showing a pet's name and the owner's phone number, a microchip provides permanent identification that can't fall off. Microchipping takes a few seconds and does not hurt the animal.
