Maumelle council picks Timmons to fill city clerk vacancy

Tina Timmons, a city employee for the past 13 years, is the new city clerk for Maumelle.

Timmons, the Web content specialist who manages the city's website maumelle.org, will serve the remaining two years of the elected office after City Clerk Joshua Clausen resigned Aug. 31. The position pays $57,120 annually.

The Maumelle City Council selected Timmons at its meeting Monday night after public interviews of six applicants. Timmons was sworn in after the vote and assumed the city clerk's duties for the remainder of the meeting.

Timmons began working for the city in 2003 as a receptionist in the city Planning Department. She then became a zoning administrative assistant and later was interim executive assistant to former Mayor Burch Johnson before managing the city's website.

Aldermen voted 4-3 for Timmons over Andrea Zimmerman, a program coordinator for an environmental and energy consulting company, in a runoff that followed a first round of voting. With five votes needed for the appointment, Mayor Mike Watson cast the deciding vote.

Aldermen's votes in the deciding round were: Ken Saunders, Jess Holt, Terry Williams and John Vaprezsan for Timmons. Rick Anderson, Marc Kelley and Steve Mosley voted for Zimmerman.

Timmons is the daughter-in-law of Ward 3 Alderman G.K. Timmons, whom the council appointed in July to fill a council vacancy. Alderman Timmons didn't participate in the selection discussion or the city clerk vote.

Vaprezsan also recused from the discussion and the first round of voting because his wife, Jennifer Lynn Vaprezsan, was an applicant for the position.

The first round of votes had 3 for Zimmerman, 2 for Timmons and 1 for Courtney Dunn, executive assistant to Mayor Watson. The council then held the runoff between the top two vote recipients.
