Wal-Mart raises pay, dodges overtime rule

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has increased salaries for entry-level managers, making them ineligible for overtime pay when a new Labor Department regulation takes effect later this year.

Employees who were being paid $45,000 annually will be paid $48,500 after receiving raises in September, according to Wal-Mart spokesman Kory Lundberg.

The change was the result of a new Department of Labor rule, which will require overtime pay for salaried workers earning less than $47,476 a year beginning Dec. 1. The current threshold is $23,660.

Jess Levin, communications director for Making Change at Wal-Mart, said the change is to the "benefit of Wal-Mart and only Wal-Mart." Making Change at Wal-Mart is a campaign backed by the United Food & Commercial Workers International Union.
