State index falls 3.4 as U.S. stocks ebb

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, dropped 3.4 to 322.30 Thursday.

"U.S. stocks moved lower on Thursday in a choppy trading session as an increase in bond yields led to a sell-off in defensive stocks," said John Blackwell, senior vice president and managing director of equity trading at Stephens Inc. in Little Rock.

Total volume for the index was 24 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
