Retired Eastern Kentucky University president named interim chancellor of ASU

Arkansas State University on Thursday named a retired Eastern Kentucky University president as its interim chancellor.

The university said in a news release that Doug Whitlock would fill the role left vacant by Tim Hudson, who resigned effective immediately last month after four years. An audit revealed Hudson used his position to seek financial assistance for his then-college-bound daughter.

Whitlock, 73, served as president at Eastern Kentucky for six years before retiring in 2013.

In a statement, ASU System President Charles Welch said Whitlock has "all the experience and character traits" he was looking for in an interim chancellor.

“By all accounts, he brought a sense of calmness to the Eastern Kentucky campus during a challenging time in its history, and I’m confident he can do the same at A-State," Welch said.

ASU will conduct a national search for a permanent chancellor next year. Whitlock, who begins the interim ASU role Sept. 12, will not be a candidate, the statement said.
