Firefighters to test fitness in face-off

The firefighters union will host a firefighters competition Sept. 16-17 in the Riverfront Park.

The Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge, a rigorous fitness competition held in more than two dozen locations nationally and internationally, is expected to attract firefighters from across the nation, according to a city newsletter. The North Little Rock International Association of Fire Fighters Local 35 will be the host.

The public is invited to watch the competition for free, according to the newsletter. The competition will be at the parking lot of the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum on the east side of the Main Street Bridge downtown.

The challenge involves pairs of competitors going head to head in five tasks as they race against each other and are timed. The tasks are climbing a five-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and "rescuing" a 175-pound dummy, all while wearing "full bunker gear" and the Scott 5.5 Air-Pak breathing apparatus.

The challenge is meant to encourage physical fitness for firefighters and to demonstrate the rigors of the firefighter profession.

Library to exhibit couple's artwork

An exhibit of mixed-media artwork and sculptures by Carol Corning and Ed Pennebaker will be featured at the William F. Laman Library Gallery, 2801 Orange St., starting Sept. 12.

The exhibit will be displayed through Nov. 4. Admission is free.

A reception is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Laman Library Gallery, according to a library news release.

Corning, a Clinton native, will show works that portray life from the 1950s and 1960s in rural Arkansas. Pennebaker, Corning's husband since 2013, is a Kansas native. He will exhibit sculptures titled Formations.

The couple live in Clinton, where Corning is an art teacher at Clinton High School.

$15 T-shirts a nod to Argenta of past

The Argenta Neighborhood Boosters group is selling Argenta T-shirts that feature the "C of A" logo that can be seen throughout City Hall.

The "C of A" logo refers to "City of Argenta," the previous name for North Little Rock. The downtown area encompasses the Argenta Historic District.

Shirts are $15. They can be ordered by email from argentaboosters@yahoo.com or by visiting the Facebook page for Argenta Boosters.

Argenta, founded in 1871, was annexed by neighboring Little Rock in 1890 as its 8th Ward. North Little Rock incorporated in 1901.

A state Supreme Court ruling in 1904 upheld a merger of North Little Rock and Argenta as part of a plan to break away from Little Rock. The name of the new city was North Little Rock until city leaders changed it to Argenta in 1906. The name reverted to North Little Rock in 1917.
