Police say a driver died after he drove off a road in west Little Rock on Monday night and traveled into a manmade pond.

An Arkansas State Police report and the Pulaski County coroner's office identified the driver Wednesday morning as a 28-year-old Little Rock man. Police said later they were looking into a report that that name may have been incorrect.

The report said the driver lost control of his vehicle while passing in and out of traffic when he was heading south on Rahling Road. He hit several small trees and eventually landed in the pond, located just east of the 1800 block of the highway.

Little Rock Police Department spokesman Richard Hilgeman said Monday that officers responded around 5:30 p.m. to a report of a red car fully submerged in the pond. The driver was pulled from the car, a 2006 Chevrolet. He was reported to be the only occupant.

The driver was transported to Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, according to the report. He was pronounced dead shortly after, Hilgeman said.

Conditions at the time of the crash were said to be clear and dry.

The death was the 369th in a traffic crash on Arkansas roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
