The bright side of life

"I think this is the best cast of Spamalot that has ever been."

--Melissa Rain Anderson, director

Well, some of us have only watched Spamalot once, so we'll have to take her word for it. We will say this: There's not a bad seat at Arkansas Repertory Theatre in downtown Little Rock. At one point, when James Lloyd Reynolds (as King Arthur) goofed around with the audience, he was actually holding hands with somebody in the front row. During the closing number, Darryl Winslow (as Sir Bedevere) dropped his hat and a paying customer handed it back to him. And Carolann Sanita's voice--what a voice!--didn't need any amplification when she sang her tunes as the Lady of the Lake/Guinevere.

A 20-year-old we know walked out of the Rep after the show one recent evening, still laughing at the performance/performers. He looked around Main Street, then back to the Rep, and said, "I didn't even know this was here."

Ah, it's easy to miss.

But shouldn't be.

The Rep can't exactly be described as a best-kept secret. Too many people love it. The Rep has a rep for putting on top-notch plays and musicals, and real pros work there. This day we saw three empty seats before the lights went down. Our considered editorial opinion: Three people missed a helluva show.
