Donation to UA to facilitate study abroad

FAYETTEVILLE -- A Fayetteville couple's $100,000 planned gift to the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville will provide scholarships for students interested in learning opportunities outside the United States.

The Grant Ginder and Katy Nelson-Ginder International Excellence Fund also will support faculty members. Students and faculty members pursuing service learning and other opportunities outside a typical classroom setting will benefit from the fund, according to the university.

"It is inspiring to see students applying their academic knowledge to help solve problems for communities in need," Katy Nelson-Ginder said in a statement released by the university. She is an assistant vice chancellor for university development at UA.

Also created by the couple's gift is the Talmadge and Laverne Nelson Study Abroad Scholarship for agriculture students looking to study abroad. The scholarship is named after Nelson-Ginder's parents. Talmadge Nelson worked for 26 years as a UA faculty member, while Patsy "Laverne" Nelson worked for more than 13 years in various roles at UA

In the 2015-16 academic year, 1,022 UA students studied abroad in UA and non-UA programs, according to the university. UA reported an enrollment of 26,754 in the fall of 2015.
