Thanks to this newspaper's indispensable In The News section on the front page, stage left, every day, Gentle (and careful) Reader knows the following:
Austin Bohanan, 18, got lost in the Great Smoky Mountains recently. He found his way out by following creeks. Yes, as somebody once told us a long time ago as we were starting out in an outdoors pursuit: If you ever get lost, just follow the creeks downstream. You'll either end up in New Orleans or San Francisco.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a Palestinian spokesman, said the territory is still waiting for a "clear vision" from the United States on peace talks with Israel. Yes, clear vision is a rarity in the Middle East these days. But if the Palestinians wanted clarity on peace, why not look, say, closer to home?
Paul LePage, who is unfortunately in the news a lot, and even more unfortunately the governor of Maine, opened a new vocational school the other day, and, by the way, announced that teachers were "a dime a dozen" and the new school will offer "more than just teaching out of a book." Kids, those who don't take education seriously and don't read those booky-things sound just like this. Beware.
Terence Naphys, of West Deptford Township, N.J., who was driving across a drawbridge last week, gunned it when he saw the bridge start to rise in front of him. He and his family made it over the gap and avoided a fall into the drink. We don't know what soundtrack should be playing now--either "Holiday Road" from Vacation or "She Caught the Katy" from The Blues Brothers--but both are stuck in our heads just now.
