Fort Smith catheterization lab to expand

Sparks Health System recently broke ground to expand its cardiac catheterization lab in Fort Smith. A cardiac catheterization laboratory performs imaging functions that view inside patients' hearts and blood vessels to see if they have heart disease.

The catheterization lab at Sparks saw approximately 3,800 patients last year and expects to increase that number with the addition of two more interventional cardiologists later this year.

The 1,600-square-foot expansion will be on the southeast corner of the hospital and connect to the existing catheterization and cardiology procedure areas. The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year, weather permitting.
