'Conversation' series starting

Mayor Sprouse will be kicking off a "Conversation" series starting this month. As part of this series, the mayor will be meeting with different religious and secular organizations and businesses in Springdale. These are casual, town hall-style meetings and anyone in the community is invited to attend and participate.

The first event, "A Conversation with Mayor Doug Sprouse," will take place at First United Methodist Church, 206 W. Johnson Ave. in Springdale. The meeting will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Family Life Center.

This is an opportunity to talk about road projects, downtown revitalization, public safety, parks and trails, the upcoming bond election, or anything else attendees would like to discuss.

Water qualityis series topic

Dan Wagner, hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center in Fayetteville, will be the featured speaker at the "Investing in Water Source Protection" speaker series. The series workshop will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Washington County Cooperative Extension office, 2536 N. McConnell Ave. in Fayetteville.

Wagner's presentation will discuss the StreamStats program, which allows users to easily obtain streamflow statistics, basin characteristics and descriptive information to estimate peak flows and helps in planning for and protecting water quality and built infrastructure.

The program is free.

Red Crossseeks blood

Feel good, do good and look good this September by donating blood or platelets to the American Red Cross and get a free haircut coupon from Sport Clips.

Those who come out to give blood or platelets Sept. 1-30 will receive a coupon for a free haircut via email several days after their donation. The coupon is valid through Nov. 11 at participating Sport Clips locations.

Club hostsBook Fair

Altrusa International of Fayetteville will host a Barnes & Noble Book Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 2,16 and 30 at 4144 N. College Ave. in Fayetteville to promote its "Young Writers" contest in conjunction with the Fayetteville Public Library's "True Lit" Festival.

The book fair will host children's authors Misti Kension, Alexandra Ott, Joan Hess, Kristin Gray and Kim Ventrella, craft activities, scavenger hunts, story time and character guests Clifford the Big Red Dog, Donald Duck and Daisy Duck.

The writing contest will be for sixth-grade students in the Fayetteville city limits, offered to public, private and home schooled students.
