UAFS holds

food drive

Many offices across the University of Arkansas Fort Smith campus are giving back during the holiday season -- even the Parking Office.

Through Wednesday, those receiving parking citations from the Parking Office at UAFS can have a ticket of $25 waived by donating 10 canned goods to the office.

All canned goods will be donated to the Antioch for Youth and Family. Citations must have been received during the fall semester. Donations can include canned fruits and vegetables, dry beans and rice.

Brooke Slaton, parking program coordinator, said the program was a dual effort to help out those in need and relieve financial strain for the UAFS campus community.

"Being able to give food to those in need this holiday season as well as being able to relieve some financial burdens from those at UAFS is a wonderful feeling," Slaton said. "The holidays should be worry free and spent with loved ones, and the fact that UAFS is helping some accomplish that is heartwarming."

Local library

offers amnesty

The Springdale Public Library will offer a fines amnesty program for children and adolescents throughout the month of December. This program will give kids and teens the chance to start the new year with a clean record by removing overdue fines which may discourage young patrons from taking full advantage of the resources offered at the library.

Late fines will be waived on all books, CDs, DVDs and other materials, no matter how long overdue. The amnesty will apply to patrons under the age of 18. If an item has been lost, the patron will be responsible for paying only the replacement cost.

Blood Center

seeks donors

Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, the local provider of blood to 40 area hospitals, has issued a Code Red Emergency Appeal for type O Negative blood. A Code Red Emergency Appeal means that there is less than a one-day supply of blood in reserve for patient use at those hospitals. The blood center needs an immediate response from donors to overcome the extremely low blood reserve levels.

CBCO donor centers are open this week in Springdale and Bentonville, with mobile blood drives scheduled in the area over the next week.

CBCO will host blood drives at the following locations:

•Holiday Island: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Holiday Island Elks Lodge, 4 Parkcliff Drive

•Pea Ridge: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, Pea Ridge High School, 781 W. Pickens

The "Miracle of Giving" blood drive will be held at CBCO at 3503 S. Thompson St. in Springdale Dec 11-15. The center will be taking donors from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 11-14 and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 15. Each donor will receive a long-sleeved shirt and special refreshments. Participants must weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 16 years of age (with parental consent).

White Lotus

raises money

White Lotus Salon and Massage in Fayetteville raised more than $1,000 for Seeds That Feed at its annual Holiday Open House Dec. 2.

The salon raffled a gift basket of over $700 worth of products and services to benefit Seeds That Feed, a nonprofit mobile food network pantry based in Fayetteville that serves those in need in Northwest Arkansas.

Seeds That Feed collects fresh produce from local farmers markets and other local farms. Margaret Thomas, nutrition and education director of Seeds that Feed, says 53 local farms contribute fresh produce, along with Whole Foods, The Rockin' Baker and The New School in Fayetteville. Thirty-five different sites in Washington and Benton counties receive fresh produce and other food from the program. Seeds That Feed has collected and distributed over 80,000 pounds of fresh produce so far.
