The National Weather Service says Northwest Arkansas could receive up to 2 inches of snow Saturday morning.

In a news release Friday afternoon, the agency updated its previous prediction, saying it now expected 1 to 2 inches of snow in some parts of Northwest Arkansas.

Forecasters said the snow will likely melt later in the day Saturday, when temperatures are expected to rise above freezing.

3:20 p.m. update

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for two Arkansas counties ahead of possible snow-covered roads and limited visibility.

The snowfall is expected to begin about midnight Friday and could leave up to an inch of snow in parts of northern and Northwest Arkansas, according to Jeff Hood, a forecaster for the National Weather Service in North Little Rock.

The advisory covers Boone and Newton counties, and it notes a "brief period of sleet" is expected to precede the snowfall.

Hood said there’s an 80 percent chance that residents in Benton, Washington, Madison and Carroll counties will see some form of wintry weather as well, though predicting if the snowfall will stick to the ground is more difficult.

The snow is likely to continue until about 6 a.m. on Saturday.
