Authorities: 2 children critically hurt in Arkansas wreck involving tractor-trailer; car's roof torn off

Two children are in critical condition after a vehicle they were traveling in crashed into a tractor-trailer in Jonesboro on Tuesday, authorities said.

The boys, aged 2 and 6, were in the back seat of a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina heading east on East Highland Drive when a 2016 Freightliner pulled in front of their vehicle about 4:45 p.m., according to a report from the Jonesboro Police Department.

The driver of the car slammed his brakes and skidded about 300 feet before sliding under the tractor-trailer, which tore the roof off his vehicle, authorities said.

The children were flown to a hospital in Memphis in critical condition.

Neither driver was injured in the wreck, police said.
