Arts Center members enjoy peek at two exhibits, lecture

Members of the Arkansas Arts Center were invited to a Jan. 26 reception and preview of two new exhibits at the center: "Herman Maril: The Strong Forms of Our Experience" and "Ansel Adams: Early Works."

The evening began with "The Strong Forms of Herman Maril," a lecture by Ann Prentice Wagner. She discussed her research for the exhibition catalog. Afterward, there was a reception featuring potato chips, onion dip and other refreshments the late Baltimore painter enjoyed serving to visitors at his home. The specialty cocktail of the evening was the Cape Codder. Black and white wintry decorations on cocktail tables and buffets echoed the black and white photographs for which Adams is famous.

The Maril exhibit features about 90 works by the modernist painter, including scenes from around Maryland and Cape Cod. Forty-one small-scale landscape photographs are in the Adams exhibit. Both collections will be on display through April 16.
