Philanthropy expert set to give speech

The vice president of the Foundation for Detroit's Future, the group that oversees the deal that resulted in Detroit's exit from bankruptcy, will speak at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service on Friday.

Robin Ferriby, who also is vice president of philanthropic services for the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, will speak at noon at Sturgis Hall.

Seats may be reserved by emailing publicprograms@clintonschool.uasys.edu or calling (501) 683-5239.

Self-made builder will discuss work

Cara Brookins, the central Arkansas mother of four whose story of building her own home with the aid of YouTube tutorial videos gained national attention this year, will speak Tuesday in Little Rock.

Brookins will talk about her experience and her book that documents it, Rise: How a House Built a Family.

Brookins said she had left an abusive marriage and needed somewhere to live with her four children, but she didn't have the means to purchase a house large enough.

Equipped with a bank loan, she and her children used online instructional videos to build their own two-story, five-bedroom house from the foundation up.

Her memoir traces those events.

Brookins and her family will appear at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service's Sturgis Hall at 6 p.m. Tuesday. They will sign books after the event.

Seats may be reserved by emailing publicprograms@clintonschool.uasys.edu or calling (501) 683-5239.

Teens to pitch ideas in business contest

Little Rock and its partners are accepting applications for a youth entrepreneur competition.

It's the second time the city will host Spark! Tank which allows students in grades nine through 12 to pitch business ideas.

The first-place winner will get $1,500; second place gets $1,000; and third place gets $500.

The pitch must include what problem the business would solve, who the primary customers would be, how the students would market their business and how the grand-prize money would help them start their small business.

Students may find more information and a registration form online by visiting littlerock.gov and searching for "Spark Tank."
