Students at Beebe in national contest

Beebe Junior High School is one of 10 finalists in a national science and technology competition for its design and construction of a robotic car seat to alert adults when children are left in a hot car.

The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest is meant to encourage students and teachers to solve community problems using science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

The finalists, including Beebe Junior High students under the direction of teacher Tate Rector, are competing for three national grand prize awards selected by a panel of judges in New York City and a community choice award selected by votes cast via social media.

Videos of the projects can be viewed on the website: Samsung.com/solve.

Viewers can cast votes by posting their favorite school's given hashtag on Twitter by 10:59 p.m. CST, Friday, March 17, 2017.

Beebe Junior High School's hashtag is #SamsungSolveBJHS.

Festival spotlights area's STEM work

More than 100 science, technology, engineering and math projects will be showcased Friday at the Arkansas STEM Festival, sponsored by the Lisa Academy and its education partners at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for some 2,000 area public school students.

The third annual festival will feature "exploration stations" with hands-on activities to engage participants and prompt conversations among students, families and local professionals in science, technology, engineering and math.

U.S. Rep. French Hill, R-Ark., will be the keynote speaker at the event's 12:30 p.m. award ceremony in the UALR Donaghey Student Center.

Other state dignitaries -- including Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin, first lady Susan Hutchinson, Attorney General Leslie Rutledge and state Sen. Jane English, R-North Little Rock, chairman of the Senate Education Committee -- are scheduled to be on hand for the project demonstrations and awards ceremony.

Lisa Academy, an open-enrollment charter school system, is partnering with UALR, the university's Education Pioneers Club, and USA Science & Engineering Festival to host the event.

Expanded school will open for tours
