State index off 3.05; P.A.M. gains 2.8%

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, dropped 3.05 to 356.46 Monday.

"The major averages fluctuated throughout the session as oil prices declined and investors await the beginning of earnings season," said Bob Williams, senior vice president and managing director of Simmons First Investment Group Inc. in Little Rock.

Declining issues outpaced advancers by 7 to 2.

Shares of P.A.M. Transportation Services rose 2.8 percent to lead the Arkansas Index.

America's Car Mart fell 2.8 percent.

Murphy Oil fell 2.7 percent.

Total volume for the index was 20 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
