June 3, 1917

BLYTHEVILLE --G. W. Beckman of near Barfield, is dead and two negroes are charged with killing him on the levee near Huffman. Beckman was returning from Caruthersville, Mo., with whiskey for a sick wife, when accosted by two negroes, who asked him to sell him some whiskey. When he refused, one of the negroes pulled a revolver and shot him, the bullet taking effect in the side, ranging almost through the body. He died a few hours later.

• The Little Rock Waterworks Commission delayed its decision Friday on whether to recommend to the City Manager Board that the possible surplus water revenues be used to secure a proposed $9 million bond issue to finance the Capitol Place underground downtown parking project. The Commission, which met twice Friday on the question, will reconvene at 10 a.m. today at the Waterworks office at the Auditorium. The plan to use water revenues has been called by the Little Rock Parking Authority the only remaining way to finance the proposed 1,600-car facility, which would be bounded by Capitol Avenue, Center, and Fourth Streets and the alley between Main and Louisiana Streets.

LONOKE -- A Lonoke County judge on Tuesday asked court spectators "where were the tears" for a 14-year-old murder victim just before sentencing her three killers to prison. Lonoke County Circuit Chancery Judge Lance Hanshaw sentenced Bryan Harp, 31, of Jacksonville to life in prison for his role in the Oct. 25 ritualistic slaying of Amy Childree, 14, of Jacksonville. Hanshaw also sentenced Nathan Childree, 16, the victim's brother, and Phillip Seigrist, 15, to 30-year prison sentences for their roles in her death.

JONESBORO -- Three young sex offenders who escaped from a Youth Services Division lockup Thursday have been captured, a police spokesman said Saturday. The three -- Marcus Galloway, Shawn Hester and Richard Richards -- ran out of the Consolidated Youth Services group home, accompanied by three girls, who were living at an adjacent shelter. The boys were considered dangerous.
