Community Service toasted at reception with governor

First lady Susan and Gov. Asa Hutchinson invited recipients of this year's Arkansas Community Service Awards to a champagne reception June 2 at the Governor's Mansion.

A private reception held in the mansion's formal living area was followed by a larger reception and awards ceremony in the Grand Hall. This is the 40th year for the awards, which are decided by a statewide committee focusing on individuals with outstanding volunteer service.

Honored this year were Christie Johnson of Conway, Selena Ellis of Benton, Virgie Phillips of Lake View and Eric and Kara Gilmore, Sarah Adams, Britney Spees and Peyton Welch, all of Little Rock. Alexis Roberson of Caraway received the Youth Humanitarian Award, and the Corporate Humanitarian Award was given to Everett Buick GMC of Benton. The National Service Award was presented to Beau Cooper of North Little Rock. Jerry Jones was named as the state's Distinguished Citizen.

The awards are sponsored by the Department of Human Services Office of Communications and Community Engagement, KARK, the McLarty Automotive Group, the Office of the Governor and the Governor's Advisory Commission on National Service and Volunteerism.
