Houseflies have only one pair of wings, which beat about 20,000 times a minute and can fly at about 5 mph.
They have compound eyes, meaning each eye has thousands of individual lenses.
The average lifespan of a housefly is about a month.
Female flies can lay about 500 eggs in a lifetime, in batches from 75-100. Larvae hatch within a day and feed on organic material.
Flies carry pathogens, including typhoid, tuberculosis, cholera and dysentery, on their bodies and in their waste and can contaminate food.
